Why Does My Baby Wake Up So Often at Night? Common Causes by Age

A baby who “sleeps through the night” is the holy grail for many parents. Yet frequent night waking is a normal part of infant development throughout the first year of life—and often beyond. Pause Before You Intervene

Not every movement or sound means your baby is fully awake. Babies naturally stir and briefly wake between sleep cycles, especially during lighter stages of sleep. If your baby is safe and not crying, pause for a minute before picking them up. They may be able to settle back to sleep on their own.

Keep Nighttime Calm and Predictable

If your baby does need you, keep your response quiet and reassuring. Use dim lighting, speak softly, and avoid stimulating play or conversation. A calm environment helps reinforce that nighttime is for sleeping, making it easier for your baby to fall back asleep.
